Meteora

I have skipped some TripAdvisor highlights on my tour so far, but it was clear for me that I wanted to visit the Meteora monasteries

Say what you want, there is something about monasteries in Greece. They are off the main roads and sometimes have strange reasons why they are where they are.

The Meteora monasteries date back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Just get more details Wikipedia in case you are interested

I had imagined the tour of the monasteries as a challenge. Had read blogs and was amazed.

The monasteries are now approached by bus, car or van. Tourists walk up the steps in sandals and sneakers. And selfies and pictures are taken on the rocks.

Yes, you still have to climb 143 steps if you want to see Metamórphosis. But that's doable.

I had prepared a tour on Komood and wanted to visit 3 monasteries <out of about 25 in total>

  1. Metamórphosis Monastery, also known as Megálo Metéoro
  2. Agios Stephanos
  3. Agía Triáda <closed on Thursdays>

Only the monasteries of Metamórphosis, Varlaám, Rousánou, Agía Triáda, Agios Stéfanos and Agios Nikólaos Anapavsás are still inhabited and can also be visited

It should have been 12 km on trails and only a few hundred meters along the paved road. I left Kastraki at 9:30 in the morning and the 600m elevation gave me more of a headache at 25 Celsius.

Most of the time I followed the MTR <Meteora Trail Running> signs. I just hiked, I couldn't imagine running the trail. But the trail is worth it even if you just hike.

I only saw tourists at the monasteries. I've seen 20 hikers at most on the trails during the day.
